There are rare moments within pockets of our lives when wearing pajamas in public is somehow universally acceptable.

For example, as a little kid, you can wear almost anything from pajamas to capes to tutus with rain boots. It's your time to be free and picking your own clothes is an empowering discovery that most parents wouldn't dare to interfere with.

As a college student, there are many moments when you can't be bothered to change your clothes. Cramming for midterms, for example, is a serious requirement that should only be disturbed by dragging yourself to the cafeteria to grab a grilled cheese for brain fuel.

As adults, there are moments when we don't want to put on actual clothes any more than we did after studying biology all night in a dorm room. And we should be granted those moments without being looked at jobless vagabonds or menaces of society.

But how do you know what is appropriate? In the age of leggings being worn as actual pants, there are many ways in which pajamas can pass as normal clothing. Keep reading to learn about 6 pajama outfits that you can wear outside of your home.

1. The Hooded Dress

Flannel pajama pants, socks with slides, and an oversized hoodie are almost a prerequisite for being a college student.

Hoodies go hand in hand with comfort. While they aren't exactly what you'd want to wear to a job interview, there aren't too many people who don't own one.

Turn your hoodie into a dress and you're good to go for entering the outside world. In fact, you could strip off your sweats, leggings, or whatever you're wearing in conjunction with it, and add some platform sneakers for some added flare.

Throw on some Birkenstocks instead and you're dressed perfectly for running errands or grabbing coffee with friends. Check out our selection of hooded dresses so that you can start wearing PJs in public with style.

2. The Slip or Robe

Robes and slips as dresses are IN. In fact, have they ever been out? If you wear a slip to bed or a robe to lounge around the house, you're in luck. You can take that look right out the front door and into the public.

Your slip can pass as a bohemian mini dress. You can compliment your look with a pair of heels and take it out on the town. Or you could throw on a t-shirt underneath and pair it with some combat boots for a more relaxed vibe.

If it's robes we're talking about, you can wear it straight out of the house. Try to pair your robe with shoes that have the same aesthetic. For instance, if you're rocking a thick robe, pair it with some heavy boots. If it's a robe made out of silk or a lighter material, opt for a pair of heels or some Chelsea boots.

And if you want to wear "regular clothes" but want to take the comfort of your robe with you, try putting it over a crop top with jeans.

3. The Nightgown

Nightgowns are reminiscent of a dress that never goes out of style - the maxi. They can give you beach vibes or club vibes, depending on the look and how you rock them.

You can throw a chunky sweater over a nightgown any day for a refined but bohemian look. Or you can add a leather jacket and some motorcycle boots for a night out with your pals. Either way, the nightgown is one of the easiest ways to wear your pajamas in style.

4. The Leggings

Leggings are another timeless staple that are very versatile. People wear them as regular clothes, to work out in, and as pajamas.

With leggings acting as real pants, they are pajama bottoms that can be worn in almost any environment. Plus there are so many different styles, textures, and patterns that exist in the world of leggings. You can be inconspicuous in a simple color like black or gray. Or you can make a statement with bold prints and colors.

5. Pajama Pants

Pajama pants come in all shapes and sizes. Most of us have had a plaid or flannel pair or two in our lifetime. But the best kind to have for both men and women are a pair of black pajama pants.

Did you know that the word "pajama" is derived from the Indian word "piejamah," which was used to describe loose pants that were tied at the waste?

Men can throw on a t-shirt and wear these out in public, no problem. Women can do the same or add heels and a light sweater for some added chic. And if they also happen to be flowy, the possibilities are endless!

6. The Sets

You know those classic pajama sets that come with collars and buttons and piping galore? Now, these are the way to make a statement in your pajamas. In fact, high-end, tailored pajamas have been around since the 1920s. They are available in a myriad of styles and colors for both men and women. They can be worn as a set or as separates.

Pair your top with jeans and some Oxfords. Or pair your pants with a tight tank and some flip-flops. Either way, the possibilities are endless when it comes to a pajama set.
